Bharatanatyam
பரதநாட்டியம்
Her degree discipline and the grammar underneath everything else. Studied formally to B.A. level at Annamalai University, Chennai.
Bharatanatyam is built from araimandi — the half-seated stance the whole vocabulary sits inside. It is not a movement but a held one, and the discipline of the form is largely the discipline of holding it.
The grammar divides cleanly: nritta, pure rhythm with no meaning attached; nritya, where gesture begins to carry sense; and natya, where it becomes drama outright. A full margam moves through all three and back, and the argument of an evening is how those proportions are struck.
It is the tradition she studied formally to degree level, and the one underneath everything else she dances.
